Key examiner messages

Top priorities from the principal examiner before you revise

1

This exam series represents a solid Level 4 difficulty for AS students, principally driven by the demanding mathematical requirements and strict marking guidelines for organic reaction mechanisms.

2

H032/01 functions as an effective breadth check with diverse multiple-choice questions, but its final section includes high-tariff structured questions that require deep comprehension.

3

H032/02 tests analytical depth, heavily rewarding candidates who can construct logical, evidence-based arguments in Level of Response (LoR) questions.

Examiner notes & key calculations

  • The Ideal Gas Equation trap: In the bromoalkane calculation, a significant number of candidates failed to convert volume from cm3\text{cm}^3cm3 to m3\text{m}^3m3 (multiplying by 10−610^{-6}10−6) or temperature to Kelvin.
  • Enthalpy signs and stoichiometry: For the neutralization of Ba(OH)2\text{Ba(OH)}_2Ba(OH)2 with HNO3\text{HNO}_3HNO3, many failed to divide the reaction enthalpy by 2 to find the enthalpy of neutralization per mole of water formed, or they missed the negative sign entirely.
  • Tangent Drawing: When calculating the rate at 50 seconds, many tried to interpolate directly from the curve rather than drawing a physical tangent at t=50t = 50t=50 s to compute the gradient.
